This autumn, Espoo will establish its first seed-bank meadows using seeds collected from local meadow and field plants. The seeds have been gathered from various locations in Espoo, such as Kauklahti and the Fallåkern meadow, and will be sown in areas like the Tapiola golf course grounds and Espoo City Garden. These meadows aim to preserve biodiversity by supporting the growth of native plant species. In the future, seeds from these meadows will be used in landscaping projects throughout the city, enhancing parks and street areas. The initiative is part of Espoo's Sustainable and Nature-friendly development programme, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining genetic diversity in local plant populations.
